Was tun, wenn man stecken geblieben ist – wenn es weder vorwärtsgeht noch zurück? Johannes Becker, Direktor am Institut für Finanzwissenschaft der Universität Münster, und Clemens Fuest, Präsident des Münchner Ifo-Instituts, versuchen es seitwärts. Die Währungsunion ist ein Desaster, aber die politische Union, die das heilen könnte, wird es nicht geben, und eine Rückkehr zu nationalen Währungen darf man nicht wollen. Der „pragmatische Vorschlag“: mehr nationale Autonomie durch weniger internationale Abhängigkeit; mehr nationale Demokratie bei mehr nationaler Verantwortung; weniger Politik und mehr Technokratie auf europäischer, dafür weniger Technokratie und mehr Politik auf nationaler Ebene. Discussion topic: The majority of the future forecasts of the 20th century was based on the growth prospects, whether of the economy, science and engineering, or population, or recovery of specific countries and regions. The first decades of the new 21st century brought considerable disillusion verging on disappointment in the modernistic pattern of steady progress. From everywhere, one can hear some doubts not only in the usefulness, but already in the inconvertibility of globalization. What is journalistic noise and what is really captured by the methods of modern science? This session offers a kind of stress test for the world powers. Leading academic experts analyze the prospects of traditional centers of capitalism and newly emerging market regions.
